The new ground is finally open and well worth the wait and all the effort that has gone into creating it. Turn off Wheatsheaf Lane and the new stand and incorporated leisure facilities appear before you at the end of the vista. And an imposing sight it is too. There is generous parking on smart new block paving to the front. The turnstiles are to your left. Turn right through the turnstiles and there is a tea hut. This is a hole in the wall at the base of the very impressive elevated stand with a current seating capacity of 300, expandable to as many as 500. The dugouts are on the far side. Behind these is covered, raised standing running about half the length of the touchline. To the right the ground tucks up close to a row of detached houses, with limited standing room. There is also limited standing room behind the goal to the left. The hugely improved laser-levelled pitch is lit by Conference-standard floodlights and watered by a computer-controlled sprinkler system. The structure housing the main stand incorporates an upmarket leisure club called the Thames Club. It contains a gym, dance studio, swimming pool, sports bar and function room, amongst other things.
