The historic town of Guildford is set in the rolling hills of the Surrey countryside, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its location and excellent transport links mean that Guildford has welcomed travellers for centuries. Although Guildford is the ancient county town and retains its traditional cobbled high street and riverside walks, it still offers the amenities of a city, with excellent shopping and entertainment and is ideal for a weekend break. Guided walks of the town offer an insight into the fascinating history of the area, taking in the Castle keep, the 15th-century Guildhall and a wealth of other historic buildings. The River Wey runs through the heart of Guildford and was one of the first rivers to be made navigable. Regular Boat Trips operate from Millbrook, Guildford to St Catherines Lock and Godalming along this tranquil stretch and there are rowing boats and canoes available for hire. The surrounding countryside is dotted with picturesque villages and a wealth of gardens and houses to visit. Guildford’s attractions include the garden at Wisley, stretching over 240 acres the flagship of the Royal Horticultural Society, the 20th-century Guildford Cathedral just outside the town, Guildford House Gallery, a 17th century Town House with many original features including a finely carved staircase, panelled rooms, decorative plaster ceilings, and the nearby Dapdune Wharf visitor centre and River Wey Navigations owned by the National Trust.
